BEST BUY CLOSES DIGITAL DIVIDE FOR NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING YOUTH AT LASOS

Grant funding from Best Buy Children’s Foundation, Wiessner Foundation and Harford County Criminal Justice Program upgrades technology for youth program

Bel Air, MD (December 22, 2010) - LASOS received a huge Holiday surprise when Best Buy on December 22, 2010 donated its expertise and product through Geek Squad for two computer work stations, plasma televisions and 10 station portable lab supported through grant funding by the Wiessner Foundation, Harford County Criminal Justice Program and Best Buy Children’s Foundation.

“Supporting programs that provide an opportunity for youth in Harford County is central to the way we do business at Best Buy.” said Jon Collazo, Bel Air Store Manager “Our goal through the Best Buy Foundation is to provide youth with experiences that will help them excel in school and LASOS’ ¡Ayuda! Program linked with technology will continue to meet that goal.”

The technology will be used to aide at risk youth with homework and other academic skills during LASOS’ ¡Ayuda! Program that meets on Wednesdays from 5-7:30. The program supports the academic, leadership, social and civic skills of underserved children. The children receive mentoring from peer mentors and certified staff. The technology will give them the advantage of linking into the world and grasping the resources needed for them to find success in the future academically and personally.

“The children strive to do there best academically and this hand up from these organizations and business are helping to level the playing field for all, they are so tickled and honored to have been thought of, and can't wait to get up to speed on how to use them. We are blessed to be serving in such a giving community. ” said Melynda Velez

To much of the surprise of ¡Ayuda! youth a grand opening and ribbon cutting was held to open the new technology center. Two LASOS youth mentor participants, Sara and Eric, Bel Air Best Buy Store Manager Jon Collazo, Harford County Director of Community Services Mary Chance and Matt Duda, Geek Squad Deputy Field Marshall along with LASOS Board of Director’s were on hand for the ribbon cutting.
